Do I have to take a driver training class?
Yes. South Carolina state law requires all 15 and 16 year olds who want a driver's license to attend a drivers training class (SC Code 56-1-160).
Do I have to have my permit before I can take the class?
No. You can take the class and practice driving with a state certified instructor before you get your permit.
What is included in the class?
The class includes 8 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours behind-the-wheel training.

No. All of the behind-the-wheel training is done in Palmetto South Driving School's vehicle.

Yes. We offer additional hourly lessons for an additional fee.
When can I drive with my permit?
You may drive from 6 a.m. to midnight if a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and has at least one year of driving experience accompanies you in the front seat. From midnight to 6 a.m., you may drive if a licensed parent or guardian accompanies you in the front seat.

South Carolina requires you to maintain a beginners permit for 180 days before you can acquire a drivers license.

When I get my license when can I drive?
You may drive alone during daylight hours from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. (or 8 p.m. during daylight savings time). From 6 p.m. (or 8 p.m. during daylight savings time) until midnight, you may drive if a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age accompanies you. Between midnight and 6 a.m., you may drive if your licensed parent or legal guardian accompanies you.
Can I get a waiver to drive to work or for school activities?
If the time limitations for a special restricted driver's license causes problems for you at your job or school, they can be waived. You must prove to the department that they interfere with your job, education or travel between home, school, vocational training or employment opportunities by submitting two separate statements.
Can I take my driving test in the driver training car?
Yes. The driver training car that you will be practicing in can be used as well for your road test for an additional fee.

Yes. We will pick you up at school or home depending on the time of your lessons.

Am I guaranteed to pass my test after taking this training class?
No. We can not make any guarantees that anyone will pass, but we can promise to do everything we can to teach you the information that you need to pass the test.
